Overview
The project is colleborated with “The Research on Fundamental Theory and Methodology of Virtualization Technology for Computing System” which is funded by The National 973 project Fundamental Research Program of China, led by Huazhong University of Science and Technology and the research team consists of scientific researchers from Peking University, Tsinghua University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, National University of Defense Technology, and Zhengjiang University. This SUR project will study and propose a novel live migration approach of virtual machines on heterogeneous platforms, which will have important impact on the resource management of data centers or clouds. Due to IBM’s pursuit of cloud computing and virtualization technology, the output of the SUR project will provide strong support on the core technology for cloud resource management.
A strong team from IBM China Development Lab (CDL), led by Mao Xinsheng(CTO of CDL,Distinguished Engineer, Member of IBM Academy of Technology), will work close with HUST’s research team. They will ensure that the technologies and tools developed by this project will become potential product offerings of IBM.
With the extended scale of computing system resources, rapidly
strengthened processing ability, daily increased kinds of resources and
the flexible application needs, it is a big challenge to explore a new
computing mechanism and mode in future information technology field.
System Virtualization as a new computing mode advances the development
of science and progress of society. It can organizes multiple computing
resources dynamically, decouples the close dependency between concrete
hardware architecture and software system. It aims at realizing
transparent and elastic computing architecture in order to construct
customized and pervasive computing environments to satisfy different
kinds of application requirements and improve the usage of computing
resources.
The Research on Fundamental Theory and Methodology of
Virtualization Technology for Computing System, which plays an
important role in the Major Project of Chinese National Program for
Fundamental Research and Development. The Sub-subject on
Multiple System Virtualization focuses on the abstraction and
management of computer system resources including virtual machines
migration. Considering the effect of the challenges of new computing
mode brought about by virtualization, researches on Multi-System
Virtualization has penetrated almost the whole scope of multi-system
research. Virtual Machines Live Migration aims at migrating the whole
virtual machine including operating system and applications within from
one running physical node to another one with the constraints that it
should prevent the normal running of guest operating system and
application from intervening caused by the migration. Virtualization
Migration is an extremely powerful tool for cluster administrators. It
provides several excellent features such as loads balancing among
servers, quality of service assurance, power energy saving, etc.
