Abstract:
High-performance computing (HPC) enabled simulation has been widely considered a third pillar of science along with theory and experimentation, and is a strategic tool in many aspects of scientific discovery and innovation. High-performance computing simulations, however, have become highly data intensive in recent years due to data acquisition and generation becoming much cheaper, newer high-resolution multi-model scientific discovery producing and requiring more data, and the insight that useful data can be mined out of large amounts of data being substantially increased. Data-driven scientific discovery has become the driving force for the next-generation supercomputing. In this talk, I will introduce our research and development findings from recent projects. In one project, we are deploying a prototype of new HPC system called Data Intensive Scalable Computing Instrument (DISCI) to address the data-driven scientific discovery needs. In another project, we are developing a decoupled execution paradigm providing the software solution. We are also working on an OpenHPC project to enable the vision of an open-source and extensible HPC platform. I will present our findings, observations, and discuss open questions as well.
Biography:
陈勇现任职美国德州理工大学计算机科学系助理教授和博士生导师,曾任职美国橡树岭国家实验室博士后研究员,伊州理工大学高级研究助理和美国阿贡国家实验室客座研究员。从事数据密集计算、高性能计算、云计算和系统结构研究。在国际会议和期刊发表论文80余篇,发表专利一项,在国际会议、高校和研究所受邀学术交流近50次。他的研究获美国国家自然科学基金会(NSF)、美国国防部(DOD)、美国能源部(DOE)和阿贡国家实验室以及橡树岭国家实验室资助。他的研究还受到业界包括Dell, NVidia,Nimboxx和StackVelocity的资助。他也担任美国国家自然科学基金会项目资金评委、美国国家航空和宇宙航行局(NASA)项目资金评委、国际学术会议和期刊组织者、评委近50次。他荣获多项奖项包括德州理工大学Mortar Board and Omicron Delta Kappa杰出教授奖、德州理工大学工程学院杰出研究奖、IEEE TCSC(Technical Committee on Scalable Computing)青年成就奖、Ralph E. Powe 青年教授奖、ACM/IEEE高性能计算杰出博士生奖、ACM/IEEE超级计算大会(SC)最佳论文提名和最佳学生论文提名。陈勇毕业于中国科学技术大学计算机系统结构专业(本科和硕士学位)和美国伊利诺伊州理工大学(博士学位)。
