报告摘要:
Phylogenetic tree reconstruction is a prominent problem in computational biology. It is of great practical significance to many important biological applications. In the literature a number of algorithms have been proposed for solving the problem. However, the models used in most automated methods are not very biologically realistic. In practice manually refined results are often found to be superior to purely automated methods. In this talk I’ll discuss one of our current research projects on designing and implementing an interactive computing system named Qphyl for phylogenetic analysis. A distinct feature of this system is that it enables biologists to effectively interact with the computation, e.g., to move the computation back and forth to different stages so users can check the intermediate results, compare results from different methods and carry out certain manual refinements using their biological domain-specific knowledge in the decision making on how a tree should be reconstructed to greatly improve the final results. Using this research as an example I’d like also to discuss with the students some issues on how to conduct effective academic research.
