报告摘要:
The last decades have witnessed the invention, development, and deployment of provably-secure cryptographic primitives and protocols, which have significantly improved cyber security (especially secure communication and authentication). However, there are also significant gaps between what is offered by cryptography and what is needed by cyber security. In this talk, we discuss suchgaps. In particular, we observe that the gaps are mainly caused by the fact that cyberspace is inevitably a very large-scale, networked, complex (software) system that also keeps human in the loop. Should time allows, we will beifly mention our initial research towards theoretical modeling of cyber security.

Shouhuai Xu is an associate professor in the Department of Computer Science, University of Texas at San Antonio. His research is primarily in making the cyberspace more secure and trustworthy. He is especially interested in mathematically modeling holistic cyber security and devising practical mechanisms (including provably-secure cryptographic ones) for countering cyber attacks (including botnets). His research has been sponsored by AFOSR, ARO, NSF, and ONR. He earned his PhD in Computer Science from Fudan University.
