EMC Research China (ERC) is an industry research laboratory of EMC.

On May 8, 2007, EMC launched a global collaborative organization, Innovation Network, in which ERC and RSA Labs are the two inceptive research laboratories. These laboratories are to conduct core research in topics of high interest to EMC and the industry leaders, develop groundbreaking technologies at the cutting edge of innovation, and provide consultation services for EMC. In addition to RSA Labs, ERC is the first research center of excellence that EMC establishes outside the United States.

EMC's Innovation Network marks the debut of a new way to conduct industrial research. In this new way, the work of ERC will feature close integration between core research activities and consultation services where the integration involves extensive uses of advanced web-services-based tools.

The mission of ERC is to drive the exploration, discovery and applications of new technologies that will shape the future of information infrastructure, its lifecycle management and services. Facing externally, we will conduct research in close collaborations with university and academic partners to make our contributions to knowledge and the improvement of life by publishing in academic forums and scholarly journals. We will also work closely with industrial partners in cross-industry and standardization activities. Facing internally, we will provide technology consultations to the need of CTOs and senior technologists of various business units and divisions who are members of Innovation Network, and we will take from them as input the requirements of technical problems and feedbacks to our consultations.

ERC's activities with external and internal orientations will vitally depend on one another. Reputations established externally through solid publications and proof-of-concept systems will not only strengthen and sharpen our abilities for internal consultations, but also empower our researchers to be viewed by EMC CTOs as trusted and authoritative sources of technological solutions to their problems. Conversely, real-world problems and requirements for innovations from interactions of internal consultations will form excellent input to motivate our external research activities.

Located in Beijing, China within the precinct to a number of top Chinese universities and many academic centers of excellence, ERC aims to not only attract the best talents from across China and the world, but also facilitate academic interactions through easy accessibilities to and sharing of resources such as national/international visitors, technical seminars and professional forums (e.g., conferences and workshops). ERC will also build a close collaborative relationship with Chinese scientific, technological and educational communities.

Research areas of interest at ERC broadly span the information infrastructure of the future: how to make the most sense of the immense and growing variety of information across everyday life and business, and how to manage computing and storage resources that process information to meet the need of ever growing sophistication for its secure and reliable use, preserving and lifecycle management.
